The Camelback Challenge

Two years ago, on January 2, 2025, I was hit by a driver while riding my bicycle home from work. I suffered a devastating injury to my left ankle. After months of trying to save my foot, I ultimately made the decision to have a below-the-knee amputation in December 2025.
For a long time, I wondered whether I'd ever ride again or climb Camelback Mountain. Now I'm ready to find out.
On January 2, 2027, I'm returning to Camelback for a personal challenge: **ride to the mountain, hike Echo Canyon, reach the summit, and ride back.** I don't know how long it will take, but I'm determined to get to the top.
And I'd like you to be part of it.
## Everyone is welcome!
You don't have to know me, be an amputee, or even be a cyclist to participate. Choose the part that works for you:
- **Ride:** Join the bicycle ride from Fry's to Camelback Mountain.
- **Hike:** Meet us at Camelback and hike Echo Canyon at your own pace.
- **Support:** Come cheer us on, take pictures, or simply be there.
- **Do it all:** Ride, hike to the summit, and ride back with us.
This isn't a race. Everyone should participate at their own pace and within their abilities. I'll be working toward my own summit, and I don't expect anyone to slow down or wait for me.
We'll finish the day with an informal gathering at Marcel's Bar, where everyone can purchase their own food and drinks.
## Why we're doing this
My story began with a road-rage incident, but this event is about more than one person or one accident. It's an opportunity to bring people together, celebrate perseverance and community, and remind each other that we all share the road.
A little less distraction. A little less impatience. A little more awareness, space, and care.
Whether you're a longtime cyclist, a casual rider, a hiker, a friend, or someone who simply believes in looking out for one another, there's a place for you here.
**The Camelback Challenge is free to participate in.** Come for the ride, the hike, the encouragement, or the company.
Two years after my crash, I'm going back to Camelback.
**I'm going to the summit. Come with me.**
More information about the starting time, route, and meetup details will be posted as the event approaches.
