Della, a North Carolina baker, is asked to make a wedding cake for Jen, the daughter of her late best friend. Della is excited at first—until she discovers that Jen is marrying another woman, Macy. Deeply religious and raised with conservative beliefs, Della struggles between her affection for Jen and her conviction that same-sex marriage conflicts with her faith. Rather than presenting simple heroes or villains, the story shows the emotional complexity on all sides of the conflict.
