Mysterious murders abound in a small town, in which a traveling carnival visits, bringing with them the eponymous Dr. Caligari and a somnambulist, Cesare. When a trio of friends tries to get to the bottom of the case, reality itself seems to turn upside down. Robert Wiene’s silent Weimar-era expressionist masterpiece launched the design of a thousand films noir, the strange camera angles and chiaroscuro lighting lending a mood of incredible dread, and Roger Ebert described it as "the first true horror film."
