The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, widely considered the first true horror film comes to McHugh’s
for one night only.
On Halloween night, the 1920 German silent horror film will wake from its sleep and be brought to life with a live musical score by Breifne Holohan to terrify the masses!
The mysterious Dr. Caligari arrives in a rural German village with his companion Cesare, a man in an eternal state of sleep who can be ordered to perform his master’s commands. A series of gruesome murders ensues leaving the village distraught and suspicious of its two new arrivals. Featuring bizarre set pieces, shadowy lighting obscures much of the action,
creating a surreal world in which the story unfolds. With its twisted visual style, strange angular lines form structures and landscapes that bend at unusual angles just as strangely as the curious tale itself. The film questions perceptions of reality, distorting one’s understanding of insanity leaving the viewer to determine their own moral conclusion to the story.
Local Drogheda musician, Breifne Holohan will give a musical performance accompanying the film as originally done in early silent movies, through improvisation, responding to the film as it unfolds. Replacing the piano typical of the silent classics, the music will be performed entirely with electronics using synthesizer, electronics and guitar.
Expect tricks and treats on the night, included in ticket price.
Book early to ensure a seat.
