From Colonialism to National Liberation Movements: A History of the Modern Arab World—will trace the trajectory of the European colonial project in the region after the fall of the Ottoman Empire and examine the national liberation movements that shaped current geopolitical realities. As a political anthropologist, I’ll be pulling from political science, history, political sociology, and political economy to offer an interdisciplinary and grounded understanding of the forces that continue to shape the region today.

Heba Ghannam is a Ph.D. Candidate in Anthropology at American University in Washington, D.C., where she also serves as an Adjunct Faculty member, teaching courses on Arab World Studies, Gender Theory, and Feminist Research Methodologies. A participant and organizer during the Egyptian uprising of 2011, Heba’s lived experiences as a displaced activist and intersectional feminist scholar inform her research and advocacy, blending rigorous ethnographic analysis with a deep commitment to amplifying marginalized voices from the postcolonial world.
