The Buffalo Hunters’ Camp: A Day in the Life on the Texas Frontier
Advertisement
For the first time as a reenactment, a full Buffalo Hunters’ Camp returns to Buffalo Gap. On Saturday, November 7, step onto the historic Moody property, directly across from the Buffalo Gap Historic Village, and walk into the 1870s and 1880s, when the Gap was a prime hunting ground and the hide trade shaped the Texas frontier. The camp sits in an open field with the Gap itself rising in the distance, much as hunters would have seen it. This is a working encampment built and staffed by true historians, not simply a staged demonstration.
Putting on the camp is Henry B. Crawford, retired Curator of History at the Museum of Texas Tech University, where he served for more than 25 years. Crawford has spent over three decades in living history and has advised productions for the History Channel, Discovery Channel, PBS, the National Park Service, and the Texas Historical Commission. He and his fellow living historians are bringing the camp to Buffalo Gap, and they will be there to answer your questions.
What you will find in camp:
🦬 Hides staked out and worked the way hunters did it.
🦬 Period firearms and ammunition, explained by people who know them.
🦬 Mules, wagons, and livestock.
🦬 Camp cooking over open fire, a food hall, and a saloon.
🦬 Frontier medicine.
🦬 The story of the Plains Indian tribes who lived on and fought over this land.
🦬 And the buffalo itself, at the center of it all.
Come with questions. Stay for the day. Then walk across the street and tour the Historic Village. Free admission, thanks to our donors.
Presented by the Buffalo Gap Chamber of Commerce and the Buffalo Gap Historic Village. Made possible with the Buffalo Gap Improvement Corp.
