Overview
What if you could draw without a pencil?
Discover the art of drawing directly with a watercolour brush in this playful, hands-on workshop. Explore how simple brushstrokes can create lines, shapes, silhouettes, textures and expressive details.
Instead of starting with pencil outlines, learn to let your brush do the drawing. Experiment with different brush sizes, paint consistency and mark-making techniques to create interesting forms and bring subjects to life.
From loose, expressive gestures to carefully observed details, discover how drawing and painting can become one creative process.
Whether you're a beginner or an experienced watercolour enthusiast, this workshop invites you to loosen up, experiment and see what your brush can do.
No pressure, no comparisons – just curiosity, creativity and the joy of making art.
Description
A brush is more than a tool for filling in shapes. It can draw a line, describe a form, suggest movement, create texture and tell a story.
In this workshop, we'll explore how to use watercolour brushes as drawing instruments, discovering the expressive possibilities of painting directly onto paper without relying on preliminary pencil sketches.
Through guided demonstrations and practical exercises, we'll explore three approaches to brush drawing.
1. Lines & Gestures – Let Your Brush Move
Discover how different brushes create different personalities of lines. Experiment with thick and thin strokes, flowing movements, broken lines and expressive marks.
- Explore brush pressure, direction and movement.
- Create continuous lines and spontaneous gestures.
- Experiment with fine details and bold brushstrokes.
- Discover how a simple line can suggest movement and character.
2. Shapes & Silhouettes – Build Without Outlines
Learn to construct subjects using blocks of colour, simple shapes and silhouettes rather than drawing every detail.
- Simplify everyday objects into basic shapes.
- Explore positive and negative space.
- Use brushstrokes to suggest form and structure.
- Experiment with light, dark and contrasting shapes.
3. Details & Textures – Make Every Mark Count
Explore how small brush movements and different painting techniques can add character and visual interest.
- Experiment with dry brush and textured marks.
- Create patterns, dots, dashes and broken lines.
- Explore fine brushwork and layered details.
- Discover how less can sometimes communicate more.
From Brushstrokes to a Painting
Bring everything together in a final creative exercise. Choose a simple subject and paint directly with your brush, combining lines, shapes, silhouettes and textures.
There is no need to make everything perfect or realistic. Focus on observing, experimenting and discovering how each brushstroke contributes to your painting.
Forget the pencil for a moment. Let your brush do the drawing!
