The Books Move On: Reminders Photography Stronghold in New Delhi

Books are not only meant to be read.
They are meant to be held, opened, touched, considered, and experienced.
Reminders Photography Stronghold (RPS) is pleased to take part in “The Books Move On,” a project organized by BOOKS BEYOND BORDERS INDIA and held at The Japan Foundation, New Delhi. This will be a rare and significant showcase in India, presenting artist books that RPS has developed and created together with artists over the years.
The showcase brings together a broad selection of books that have emerged through RPS’s bookmaking practices, especially through “PHOTOBOOK AS OBJECT” and “PHOTOBOOK WHO CARES.” Many of these works are usually only available to encounter by visiting the RPS library in Tokyo, making this a special opportunity to experience them in New Delhi.
How is a book born? How does it leave the artist’s hands and travel to another place? Through this showcase, visitors will be able to encounter the journey of these books directly, by holding them and turning their pages. During the three-day program, talks and a Q&A with Sheetal Mallar, Tamaki Yoshida, and Yumi Goto will also offer different perspectives on how books are made, shaped, and passed on to readers.
Indian photographer Sheetal Mallar, who has just completed “PHOTOBOOK AS OBJECT” in Tokyo, will speak about her long-term project “Rocket Rani” and how she is bringing it into the form of a book. Her talk will share the current process of shaping nearly two decades of photographs into an artist book—one that holds the rhythm, atmosphere, characters, and memories of the spaces and communities that have formed part of cinematic history.
Tamaki Yoshida, whose artist book “Jonokuchi” has just been published, will speak about the process of arriving at the book’s structure after five years of photographing and observing in Rausu, Hokkaido. Rather than adding more images to the work, she came to understand that the book had to be made by taking away. Moving between town and forest, visibility and invisibility, and the presence and absence of the bear, her talk will consider how the act of turning pages can become a way of moving between worlds.
Yumi Goto will join a Q&A reflecting on RPS’s long-standing practice of making photobooks in collaboration with artists. She will speak about the photobook not as a vessel for photographs, but as a structure that holds an artist’s questions, research, materials, editing, handwork, and memory. The conversation will also consider how a book continues beyond the hands of its maker, travelling to another place and taking on new meanings in the presence of readers yet unknown.
A book walks on.
The books that RPS has carried with this belief will now set foot in New Delhi.

BOOKS BEYOND BORDERS INDIAが企画する「The Books Move On」に、リマインダーズフォトグラフィーストロングホールド（RPS）が参加します。会場はニューデリーの国際交流基金ニューデリー日本文化センター。RPSがこれまで作家たちとともに取り組み、作り出してきたアーティストブックを紹介する、インドで初めての貴重なショーケースとなります。
展示されるのは、「PHOTOBOOK AS OBJECT」や「PHOTOBOOK WHO CARES」を通して生まれた本を中心に、RPSの本づくりの歩みをほぼ網羅する内容です。ふだんは東京のRPSの図書室まで足を運ばなければ手に取ることのできない本も多く含まれます。
一冊の本がどのように生まれ、どのように作家の手を離れ、別の土地へ渡っていくのか。今回のショーケースでは、そうした本の歩みを実際に手に取りながら見ることができます。さらに会期中には、シータル・マラー、𠮷田多麻希、後藤由美によるトーク／Q&Aも予定されており、それぞれの立場から、本がどのように作られ、どのように読者へ手渡されていくのかを語ります。
先日東京で「PHOTOBOOK AS OBJECT」を終えたばかりのインドの写真家シータル・マラーは、長年取り組んできたプロジェクト「Rocket Rani」を、どのように本という形へと導いていくのかを語ります。映画産業の歴史を形づくってきた場所やコミュニティ、そこに息づいていたリズム、空気、人びとの記憶を、ページの中でどのように受け止め、立ち上げていくのか。その制作の現在地を共有します。
また、刊行されたばかりのアーティストブック「序の口」を制作した𠮷田多麻希は、北海道・羅臼町での5年にわたる撮影と観察を経て、膨大な写真を「足す」のではなく「削ぎ落とす」ことで本の構造へとたどり着いた過程を語ります。町と森、見えるものと見えないもの、熊の存在と不在。そのあいだを、ページをめくる行為によって行き来する本のあり方について考えます。
そして後藤由美は、RPSがこれまで作家とともに取り組んできた写真集制作の実践について、Q&A形式で話します。写真集を写真の器ではなく、作家の問い、リサーチ、素材、編集、手作業、記憶を受け止める構造として考えること。そして、本が作家の手を離れたあと、別の土地へ渡り、まだ見ぬ読者のもとで新たな意味を帯びていくことについて語ります。
本は独り歩きをする。
そう言い続けてきた本たちが、このたびニューデリーの地を踏むことになりました。
