The Book That Changed the World: William Tyndale and the Battle for the English Bible

St Peter’s Church, in association with St Albans Cathedral, is proud to present an extraordinary one-hour dramatic performance right here in St Albans. "The Book That Changed the World: William Tyndale and the Battle for the English Bible" tells the true story of a scholar, a fugitive, and a revolution that shaped our language and our faith. Five hundred years ago, Tyndale risked everything to translate the Bible into English – an act punishable by death. His work was smuggled across borders, burned by bishops, and ultimately cost him his life. But his words survived, shaping not only the English language but the very idea that ordinary people should have access to scripture.
With an introduction explaining the context, and a powerful staged debate between Tyndale and his inquisitor, this performance in English brings history vividly to life. Audiences will witness the clash between authority and conscience, tradition and translation, fear and freedom. The event is part of the 2026 quincentenary programme honouring the deep historical connection between our twin cities, St Albans and Worms – the very city where Tyndale's forbidden English New Testament first came off the printing press in 1526.
