Does your child struggle with model drawing in math questions? They draw something, boxes and labels all in the right places, but neither of you can quite tell if it's useful, or how it actually connects to the answer.
It's not a drawing problem. It's a thinking problem, and it's learnable.

What's Happening in School?

Model drawing is taught differently in almost every school. There's an MOE syllabus behind it, but rarely a standard way of teaching it, so kids are often thrown straight into questions without ever being shown what the different types of models actually are. They end up guessing on two fronts at once: which model to reach for, and then how to draw it once they've decided. And even when the drawing is correct, that's often where it stops. The model gets drawn, marks get given, but it's never actually used to solve anything.

The Difference This Workshop Makes

In short: your child leaves with a step-by-step way of thinking through any model question, not just today's, built and refined over years, not improvised on the spot.

Using the Blueprint Berwin has developed, alongside hands-on elements built into the workshop, your child works through both model types, Part-whole and Comparison, from the ground up in a way that's genuinely fun and easy to follow. It starts with real sample questions, so they see what each model actually looks like before anything else happens.

Your child gets hands-on practice with the bar-drawing mechanics behind every model type, with a focus on mastering the two-period comparison model first. It's the more challenging version of the two, but that's exactly why it works: master it, and the simpler one-period version clicks almost automatically, since the thinking carries straight across.

Each step in the Blueprint gets its own memory hook, something to hold onto beyond just the three hours. And the session doesn't stop once a model is drawn correctly. The last and most important part is using it, actually solving the question with it, which is the part most classrooms skip straight past.

By the end of the session, your child isn't just drawing boxes better, they have a way of thinking they can bring to any model question, not only the ones covered in the room. Instead of staring at a question unsure where to start, they have the Blueprint: what type of model to use, how to build it, and how to actually solve with it. That's the real shift, from guessing to knowing, and it's usually the part that outlasts the workshop itself.

Learning Objectives

• The two model types, Part-whole and Comparison, and when each one applies
• Clean, easy-to-follow bar-drawing mechanics, the foundation everything else is built on
• The thinking process behind model drawing, through Berwin's own Blueprint, so every model is drawn with clarity and confidence
• Memory hooks for each step, built through interactive elements like live model blocks, so the Blueprint sticks beyond just this session
• Using the model to actually solve, not stopping once it's drawn

Berwin Leong is a Learning Architect, founder of Berleaf Education, and the title isn't a flourish.
