On July 14th, 1999, The Blair Witch Project hit theaters and completely turned the horror film genre on it's head. No one had ever seen anything like it. Audiences were equal parts terrified and elated. Produced on a tiny budget of $60,000, The Blair Witch Project became a massive cultural phenomenon, pulling in an estimated 27 million theatergoers in the U.S. alone based on its $140 million domestic box office, and roughly 45 to 50 million total ticket buyers worldwide from its $248 million global gross. TBWP would ultimately inspire a whole new market for "found footage" horror films and is, to this day, considered to be one of the most influential horror films of all time.
