An Ames native who played for one of Marshalltown’s famed baseball teams in the 1880s and later became a dynamic evangelist is the subject of the next “History on Second Tuesday” event at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 12, at the Mowry-Irvine Mansion, 503 W.Main St., Marshalltown.
The life of the legendary Billy Sunday is offered by the Historical Society of Marshall County (HSMC), presented by Historian Craig Bishop – a native of Hutchinson, Minn. - who also authored “Billy Sunday: The Baseball Evangelist.” The event is co-sponsored by Humanities Iowa and HSMC.
It is open to the public and free-of-charge. Seating is limited and reservations are not accepted. A free-will donation is encouraged to allow HSMC to continue ongoing efforts to fulfill its mission. Free-of-charge parking is available on West Main Street and adjoining streets.
After playing semi-professionally in Marshalltown, Sunday then signed a contract with the Chicago White Stockings – the predecessors of the Chicago White Sox. Sunday played professional baseball eight seasons and known for his baserunning skills. He was inspired to become an evangelist and later, a major advocate for prohibition. His wife served as his business manager and Sunday’s huge rallies – including one in
Marshalltown - would later serve as a model for modern day evangelists such as Billy Graham.
