Two years after noir masterwork Out of the Past, producer Howard Hughes brought Mitcham and Greer together again to star as two people who have been robbed by the same crook, and team up, reluctantly at first, to track him down. They chase the crook across Mexico, all the while being watched themselves by policemen, played by William Bendix and Ramon Novarro. The Big Steal has thrilling chases and plenty of humour, and Mitcham and Greer are again well-matched.
Hughes wanted to cash in on Mitchum’s notoriety following his arrest for possession of marijuana, but his stay in prison, as well as Greer’s pregnancy, meant director Siegel had to shoot fast and out of sequence. The film came in under budget, with a compact running time of 71 minutes.
