The BBNJ Treaty — A New Chapter in Ocean Governance
About this Event
Have you ever wondered who looks after the mysterious parts of the ocean that don’t belong to any single country? For a long time, the "High Seas", which cover nearly half of our planet, were like the Wild West, with very few rules to protect the incredible life beneath the waves. But everything changed this year.
On January 17, 2026, a historic High Seas Treaty or BBNJ Agreement finally became international law. This is a massive win for the planet, and now the real work begins. We are bringing together students, scientists, and leaders at the University of Nairobi’s Mombasa Campus to talk about how we actually start protecting our shared ocean.
Whether you are a student, policy-maker, scientist or just someone who cares about the environment, this event is for you. We’ll explore how this Treaty helps share the benefits of ocean discoveries fairly and how it allows us to create massive protected areas in the middle of the ocean for the very first time.
No prior expertise is needed, just bring your curiosity and your passion for the blue planet!
Please note, this is not an official Our Ocean event, this is an external event and a badge is not required to join.
