What was the plan behind the German offensive of February 1916? A thundering opening bombardment brought early success but the German advance soon slowed and the French refused to give up. By midsummer the offensive was a lost cause but the French continued to hit back and fighting went on to the end of the year. Instead of the intended short, sharp offensive, it became the longest battle of WWI but did it matter and could the German plan ever have worked?
