The Banned Book Club is led by Bryn Durgin. September's selection is "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury.
About this Event

The Banned Book Club is led by Bryn Durgin. It is dedicated to reading and protecting the most important and threatened books for our generation. September's pick is Fahrenheit 451. Nearly seventy years after its original publication, Ray Bradbury's internationally acclaimed novel stands as a classic of world literature set in a bleak, dystopian future. Today its message has grown more relevant than ever before. Fahrenheit 451 is banned or challenged due to "vulgar language and content."

We will meet in person in the loft at our store at The Mark, 117 S. Pineapple Ave. The book club is $17, which includes a copy of Fahrenheit 451 to be picked up at Bookstore1 any time before our meeting.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Guy Montag is a fireman. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television “family.” But when he meets an eccentric young neighbor, Clarisse, who introduces him to a past where people didn’t live in fear and to a present where one sees the world through the ideas in books instead of the mindless chatter of television, Montag begins to question everything he has ever known.

RAY BRADBURY (1920–2012) was the author of more than three dozen books, including Fahrenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles, The Illustrated Man, and Something Wicked This Way Comes, as well as hundreds of short stories. He wrote for the theater, cinema, and TV, including the screenplay for John Huston’s Moby Dick and the Emmy Award–winning teleplay The Halloween Tree, and adapted for television sixty-five of his stories for The Ray Bradbury Theater. He was the recipient of the 2000 National Book Foundation’s Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, the 2007 Pulitzer Prize Special Citation, and numerous other honors.

ABOUT BOOK BANS:

Book bans in public schools have recurred throughout American history, and remain an issue of concern to us at Bookstore1Sarasota. Over the past years, the scope of such censorship has expanded rapidly. In response, PEN America has collated an Index of School Book Bans, offering a snapshot of the trend. The index provides a comprehensive list of books banned in the first half of the 2022-2023 school year. Check it out and join us in our efforts to protect free expression and students' first amendment rights. You can view the index here: https://pen.org/book-bans/pen-america-index-of-school-book-bans-2023-2024/.
