Perched high in the Arctic Ocean, far north of mainland Norway and only about 1000 km from the North Pole, the Svalbard archipelago is the very frontier of the inhabited world. Yet in May, this frozen realm begins to soften. The light returns in full power, the polar night long gone, and the landscape shifts from deep winter silence to the vibrant stillness of Arctic spring.Snow still drapes the mountains and glaciers, but lower valleys slowly reveal patches of tundra. Tiny but resilient flowers such as purple saxifrage and Arctic poppies push through the thawing ground, painting subtle colours across the otherwise monochrome terrain. Migratory birds return in growing numbers, filling the cliffs with life and sound. Reindeer graze on newly exposed vegetation, Arctic foxes roam the valleys in their lighter summer coats, and walruses haul out on drifting ice. May is a month of transformation, a rare window when winter and summer overlap in a dramatic Arctic duo.
Unlike the deep freeze of winter, May brings milder temperatures, ranging between -5°C and +5°C. The midnight sun approaches, stretching the days into endless golden hours perfect for exploration. Fjords begin to loosen their icy grip, allowing boat journeys along glacier fronts and toward the shifting pack ice. It is a time of restart, energy, and movement.
Travelling to Svalbard in May means experiencing contrast at its finest. You may drive across snowy terrain in the morning and navigate open Arctic waters in the afternoon. Wildlife becomes more active, photography conditions are exceptional, and the light is soft, low, and never truly fading, creating an almost dreamlike atmosphere.
May is also one of the best periods for marine exploration. As sea ice retreats, access to dramatic glacier walls and remote coastlines improves. Seabirds gather at nesting cliffs, seals rest on ice floes, and there is always the possibility of spotting the true monarch of the Arctic — the polar bear, roaming along the ice edge.
If March belongs to the snowmobile and northern lights, May belongs to light, wildlife, and awakening landscapes. It is a month for those who want to witness Svalbard in transition of raw, alive, and endlessly inspiring.
Are you ready for Polar Wilderness?
Let's go!!
DAY 1 // Arrival in Longyearbyen & Into the Wild
Morning flight from Oslo to Longyearbyen, situated on Spitsbergen Island, northernmost town on Earth.
Drop the luggage and head out for first adventure: exploring the rugged Arctic terrain by powerful ATVs. We follow gravel tracks and wide valleys beyond the settlement, surrounded by dramatic mountains and vast open landscapes. Expect raw nature, river crossings, and panoramic viewpoints that stretch toward Adventfjorden.
In the evening, we head out beyond town once more for an experience of the wilderness. As the Arctic light lingers late into the night, we gather in a remote setting of hunters hut to enjoy warm food and stories about life in the High Arctic.
DAY 2 // Fjords, Wildlife & Glaciers by Sea
Today we trade wheels for water and head out onto the fjords. With the ice gradually retreating, May is a prime month for exploring Svalbard’s spectacular coastline by boat.
We sail through Isfjorden and into glacier-rich areas where towering ice walls descend dramatically into the sea. Keep your camera ready: seabirds circle above, seals rest on floating ice, and walruses may be spotted along remote shores. The sound of cracking ice and distant glacier calving adds a powerful soundtrack to the day.
Our team shares insights into Arctic ecology, geology, and the delicate balance of this environment, as we drift among some of the most impressive scenery in the archipelago.
DAY 3 // High-Speed Arctic Coastline Expedition
it's time for a thrill. We board rigid inflatable boats designed for polar conditions and set off along the wild western coastline of Spitsbergen.
Our goal: the shifting ice boundary where solid pack ice meets open sea. This is prime territory for Arctic wildlife. Polar bears sometimes patrol these edges in search of seals, while seabirds gather in enormous colonies along steep cliffs.
Riding low over the water, surrounded by glaciers and sculpted ice formations, is an unforgettable experience. The scale of the Arctic becomes truly tangible here: vast, powerful, and yet humbling.
We return to Longyearbyen in the evening, windswept and exhilarated.
DAY 4 // Dog Sledding Across the Arctic Landscape
Our final full day connects us with one of Svalbard’s most iconic traditions: travelling with Greenland dogs.
These strong and enthusiastic dogs guide us through valleys and open terrain just outside Longyearbyen. The bond between musher and dogs is immediately clear, and participating in this experience offers insight into traditional polar travel methods.
The rhythmic sound of paws against the ground, crisp Arctic air, and the surrounding mountains create a serene yet powerful finale to our adventure.
Afternoon at leisure for souvenir shopping, visiting the local museum, or simply soaking in the extraordinary atmosphere of the High Arctic one last time.
DAY 5 // Departure
Breakfast at the hotel and transfer to the airport for the return flight to Oslo with memories of a sky that never truly darkens, glaciers and the awakening Arctic wilderness.
