This is a full 6 week program for ages 12-18. Students should attend all 6 dates.

The Art of Moviemaking:

Artists have worked behind the scenes in movies for years! In The Art of Moviemaking, led by local artist Bruce Orr, you can be a mural painter, a puppet rigger, and a model builder!

Did you know the old Star Wars movies used paintings as backdrops? Connect with the art of mural painting in film, and learn from veteran painter Bruce Orr how to paint colorful, imaginative landscapes and then use them in a movie!

Stop motion is making a comeback! Learn how to build armatures, sculpt with clay, and basic anatomy to create your own three-dimensional animated character!

About Bruce Orr:

I grew up in Delaware City playing with bugs and inventing fantasy worlds.

I received a MFA from University of the Arts in 1994, and got a masters from Hahnemann University in 1996. While in Philly, I created and ran an underground comic label called Immersion Press and worked as an art therapist in an acute psychiatric ward. Through the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, I assisted on several murals and as an illustrator, I created a children’s book about hospitalization and art therapy for Hollister Publications. In 1999 I became part of the art collective Puppet Uprising. This work in puppet design and show writing lead me to the role of Education Coordinator for the Spiral Q Puppet Theater.

In 2002 I moved to Portland, Oregon and started the Mudeye Puppet Company, a name for myself making puppets out of trash and teaching kids how to make puppets out of trash. Through Mudeye I created over 50 original puppet shows, performed at hundreds of schools, libraries and street fairs and received numerous grants from local arts agencies. I opened for Ryan Gosling’s band, Dead Man’s Bones. I built giant recycled sandals for Keen footwear. I created an annual puppet venue called PuppetGanza. I also was part of a group called Metro Murals, through which I painted the first legal mural in years for the School Creative Reuse Action Project (SCRAP) in 2004.

In 2011 I moved to Beverly, Massachusetts to join the team at Raw Art Works (RAW) in Lynn to work as an Art Therapist. I was the director of the male identifying public art program and ran a fine arts studio group for artistically advanced teens for 13 years. I painted murals for Carlton Innovation School, North Shore Children’s Museum, Montserrat College of Art and Beyond Walls. I recently finished a large scale “Garden City” installation for the city of Beverly at the former Family Dollar on Cabot street, entirely made from recycled materials.

I started an arts program called InkWell, with free art classes scheduled to start at the Peabody Institute Library in September. InkWell strives to provide accessible arts experiences for all ages with an emphasis on creative reuse and self expression. Classes start in September at Peabody Institute Library and run until December.

This workshop is $250 per student.
