We are thrilled to welcome Sans Gundlach back to the Well for the 5th time to offer this popular and meaningful workshop!
Join Sans as she guides an exploration of the use of prayer beads in different faith traditions and then shares how to design prayer beads for your own spiritual practices. The English word bead derives from the Old English noun bede which means prayer. Strings of beads or prayer beads have been used for millennia to mark the repetitions of chants, prayers, or devotions. In the Christian tradition, the use of pebbles or knotted ropes to count prayers was a common practice of the Desert Mothers and Fathers in the 3rd to 5th centuries. Whether it be Anglican prayer beads, Catholic rosaries, Buddhist or Hindu mala beads, the Islamic misbahah, or an Eastern Orthodox knotted rope, followers of these traditions use the beads as a tactile spiritual practice to help focus and center while drawing them closer to the Divine.
In this creative workshop, you will also have an opportunity to make your own prayer beads from the vast and beautiful supplies provided, reflect and share on the process, and then spend a little time with others engaging with your new beads in prayer or meditation.
As we begin the season of giving, perhaps you might wish to make a set of beads for a loved one or give the workshop as a gift so that you can share the experience together as you each make your own set of beads. What a beautiful and meaningful gift!

FACILITATOR BIO:
Sans’ love for beads began in childhood when she started playing with buttons in her grandmother’s sewing box. She started beading in her early 20’s and learned about the Anglican Rosary about 25 years ago. She had a beautiful and significant spiritual experience with the Marian Rosary. Sans began making the Anglican rosary and giving them away as gifts. She also makes them for sale. As her experience with beads deepened, Sans began exploring prayer beads across different faith traditions.
