The day's festivities will include live tunes, cupcakes, and unexpected surprises as we reveal what was sealed in the artwork at the time of its dedication in 2010.
About the Event:
In 2010, Public Art of the University of Houston System commissioned and dedicated "The Statue of Four Lies," from UH alumni and renowned artists, The Art Guys. The sculpture bears the Latin inscription: Mundus vult decipi ergo decipatur ("the world wants to be deceived, so let it be deceived").
Embedded in the public artwork is a time capsule, scheduled to be opened on September 26, 2026 — 16 years after the artwork's dedication and on the date the artwork itself presents, perhaps as one of its many lies: the supposed 100th anniversary of the founding of the University of Houston.
This celebration is inspired by the artwork itself, and caps a two-day tribute to The Art Guys and their work. Join us the day before for a panel discussion on the history, meaning, and enduring relevance of The Statue of Four Lies and the broader artistic practice of The Art Guys — [link to panel event].
The day's program celebrates the careers of two of the most accomplished alumni of the university's School of Art while highlighting the Public Art UHS Collection as an outdoor museum for all. Visitors are invited to experience the university's diverse collection of public art, underscoring its role as a cultural resource for both the campus community and the greater Houston public.
