You know how to cook. You know what tastes right. This course is about learning to put that knowledge on the page — precisely, vividly, and in a way others can follow, taste, and love.

Coastal Table and Tales is proud to host The Art and Science of Recipe Writing, a six-week course taught by Savannah's award-winning journalist, documentarian, editor and cookbook collaborator, Amy Paige Condon. Whether you are working toward a cookbook, exploring food writing, or translating beloved family recipes into heirlooms worth passing on, this course gives you the skills, the language, and the kitchen time to do it well.

• Week 1 — May 28: Consider the recipe. Explore the structure, organization, and anatomy of a well-written recipe.
• Week 2 — June 4: Diagram and take notes. In-class exercises dissecting real recipes — identifying what works, what is missing, and what needs clarity.
• Week 3 — June 11: A trip to the market. Field trip to the Savannah Sunset Market to source inspiration straight from the farmers and makers who grow it.
• Week 4 — June 18: The craft of food writing. Voice, sensual language, history, place, and the difference between complex and complicated.
• Week 5 — June 25: Recipe testing and revision. Into the kitchen — cook your dish, take careful notes, research, and revise.
• Week 6 — July 2: Potluck and workshop. Bring your dish, share a meal, and exchange the recipes the class has developed together.

• At least one original, tested recipe — developed, written, and workshopped with your classmates
• A curated reading library of cookbooks, culinary magazines, food essays, and novels — shared via Google Drive
• Hands-on kitchen experience, from tastings and instructor demos to full recipe testing
• Written and verbal feedback on your recipe and writing from your instructor and peers
• The recipes of every student in the class

This course is designed for curious, enthusiastic home cooks, aspiring food writers, and anyone who dreams of developing recipes but is not sure where to start. You do not need expert knife skills — but you should know what sauté means. This is not an introductory cooking class, and it is not for those focused primarily on social media content creation. It is for people who love to cook, love to experiment, and are ready to put their passion into words.
