Programmed by David Schwartz, Independent Curator & Writer
Novelist and journalist Mordecai Richler was best known as a chronicler of Jewish life in the Mile End neighborhood of Montreal. This film adaptation of his classic coming-of-age novel The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz stars Richard Dreyfuss in his first–and one of his best–performances as the ambitious, endlessly energetic, and frequently obnoxious young hustler. Constantly looking for ways to make money, he is a waiter, taxi driver, drug smuggler, forger, pinball-machine owner, and even becomes a filmmaker. (His first production, Happy Bar-Mitzvah, Bernie! is a wild experimental film). Rarely screened, this forgotten gem will be shown in a restored version from the Toronto International Film Festival. (Canada, 1974, 129 mins, English | Dir. Tod Kotcheff)
“No matter how phenomenal Richard Dreyfuss is in other roles, it’s not likely that he’ll ever top his performance in this teeming, energetic Canadian film. His baby-faced Duddy is a force of nature, a pushy 18-year-old con artist on his way to becoming an entrepreneur.”
