John Ellison was born in Montgomery, WV on the banks of the Kanawha River and grew up in the mining town of Landgraff in McDowell County. In 1959, he quit his job at the Carter Hotel in
Welch, put his belongings in a grocery bag and bought a one-way ticket to Rochester, NY.
With five-lifetime achievement awards and a Grammy nomination for Male Vocalist of the Year, John Ellison's contributions to the music industry are both deep and legendary. In July, 2024,
BMI honored Ellison for his iconic hit “Some Kind of Wonderful” which has been played more than 6 million times on commercial radio and recorded by 75 different artists including Buddy Guy, Huey Lewis and the News, and, most recently, Rod Stewart. In 2015, he was inducted into The West Virginia Music Hall of Fame.
