Summary: The presentation provides insight into the microelectronics ecosystem in applied research in Germany. It shows how key players such as the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, the Fraunhofer Group for Microelectronics, and the Research Fab Microelectronics Germany (FMD) work to drive innovation.
The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is considered Europe's largest organization for applied research and actively shapes key technologies. The Fraunhofer Group for Microelectronics brings together the expertise of 11 Fraunhofer Institutes along the entire value chain. The Research Fab Microelectronics Germany (FMD), a joint initiative of Fraunhofer and Leibniz Institutes, provides state-of-the-art infrastructure and supports companies in bringing new technologies to application more quickly.
This creates a central platform for cooperation between science and industry. This strong foundation has given rise to the APECS pilot line as part of the EU Chips Act, which utilizes and expands the FMD's expertise. The APECS pilot line strengthens European semiconductor manufacturing and chiplet innovation within the framework of the EU Chips Act. It gives companies access to cutting edge technologies, promotes sustainable innovation, and supports the integration of heterogeneous systems. APECS, supported by ten partners from eight countries, offers services for research and industry, improves quality assurance, and accelerates the market introduction of new technologies. Dr. Stephan Guttowski led the team that prepared the application for the APECS pilot line, coordinated its development in the first six months, and will provide an overview of this work.
