Who was Sappho?
Sappho was an Ancient Greek poet who lived between 630 and 570 BCE from the island of Lesbos. Sappho is known for her lyric poetry, written to be sung while accompanied by music. After her death she became a figure of legend and was canonized in the Hellenistic period as one of the nine lyric poets worthy of study. Much of her poetry exists today as fragments.
