For "The Americans," Patton is traveling across the country, creating photo portraits that highlight the wildness and breadth of American identity as expressed through Americans' occupations.
"Americans define ourselves by what we do," Patton writes. "It's our first question to strangers, our shorthand for identity.
"'The Americans' weaponizes that reductionism against itself, stripping everything back to its barest form, but still leaving a portrait of a real person. ... Each stands alone, yet together they form a collective portrait of a country that both clings to and resists categorization."

About Aaron Patton:
Aaron Patton is a collector of faces and stories. Professionally, he is a commercial and editorial photographer with a career spanning nearly two decades. His client and publication list includes USA Today, Entertainment Weekly, The Guardian, MidwestLiving, Warner Bros./Discovery, FILA, Getty Images, and many more.
His work explores identity, perception, and the tension between how people present themselves and how he chooses to see them. His photography has been commissioned by national brands and media outlets, and The Americans is his most personal project to date—an evolving portrait of a country through the people who define it.
Patton’s approach is both direct and introspective. He doesn’t just photograph subjects; he examines the space between how we present ourselves and who we are, pushing beyond surface impressions to reveal something deeper—not just about the subject, but about himself. He holds to Steiner’s belief that “every portrait is a self-portrait,” and as such looks to find a place of common ground with everyone he photographs.
