The Alterpiece a bold and unusual artwork by artist Mark Rucker will be presented to the public for the first time at the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art in the Rotary Centre for the Arts Tuesday November 19 through Saturday November 24 between the hours of 11 am and 6 pm.
The Alterpiece a contemporary version of a Medieval triptych was created over a thirty-five-year period and completed in Peachland in 2021. The work is inspired by the Isenheim Altarpiece painted by German artist Mathias Grunewald. According to Rucker “Grunewald’s masterpiece was created in the early16th Century not so much a work of art as regarded by art historians but as a medical healing device which was much needed in that day and age.” Rucker’s Alterpiece transposes a traditional crucifixion theme into our modern world at a critical time when people are seeking to find more meaning in their lives. The mixed-media kinetic work is challenging presenting an assortment of ideas historical connections and aesthetic surprises. Lorna McParland said “This work is important as it represents the evolution of an artist from concept to creation and finally in the case of The Alterpiece after many years its completion.”
Mark Rucker will be on hand during the week for discussions and interviews about the work. The Alternator is located on the first floor of The Rotary Centre of the Arts located at 433 Cawston Avenue in Kelowna.
