The Alabama Solution: Film Screening + Conversation

In 2019, filmmakers Andrew Jarecki and Charlotte Kaufman visited an Alabama Pr*son, where incarcerated men quietly warned that violence and abuse were being hidden from the public. What followed was an unprecedented six-year investigation into one of the nation’s deadliest Pr*son systems. The film follows incarcerated activists Robert Earl Council (Kinetik Justice) and Melvin Ray (Bennu Hannibal Ra Sun), co-founders of the Free Alabama Movement, who risk everything to expose a pattern of brutality, corruption, and official narratives that collapse under scrutiny. Using unprecedented footage captured on contraband phones, the film reveals a Pr*son system built on secrecy, violence, and exploitation.

This screening is especially designed for those interested in exploring the intersection of technology and justice. For decades, prisons have been void of modern communications technology. While that’s changing, those introducing new services and products to these spaces are doing so in predatory ways that prioritize profits and surveillance, making contraband cellphones critical to the exposure of Pr*son conditions and survival of incarcerated people.

Following the screening, we will host a conversation with one of the film’s co-producers Alex Duran and Bianca Tylek, Executive Director of Worth Rises, focused on Pr*son profiteering and the fight for free communication behind bars.
