As a final tribute to our Ice Age in Maryland Exhibit featuring the Woolly Mammoth, NHSM is welcoming, for one night only, the incomparable Charles Wilson Peale to the museum. He who excavated a mastodon on a farm in New York and set it on display in 1802 is coming to see the woolly mammoth before it leaves. In this living history performance featuring Bob Gleason from the American Historical Theatre you can “meet” Mr. Peale in person! Learn about his incredible life from the man himself. Don’t miss the opportunity to see the artist in our museum.Revolutionary in all senses of the world, Charles Wilson Peale blazed a trail on which the Natural History Society of Maryland still travels. He was a revolutionary in the war for independence. He was a revolutionary artist who painted over 60 portraits of George Washington, more than any other artist. He was a revolutionary in museums, establishing the first public natural history museum in the United States on the second floor of Independence Hall, and he was a revolutionary in paleontology, putting on display in that museum the first articulated skeleton of a mastodon.
Peale’s son, Rembrandt, followed in his father’s footsteps as an artist and museum maker. In Baltimore, The Peale, commissioned by Rembrandt in 1813, was the first museum that was purposefully built in the United States.
Doors open at 5:30PM
Performance starts at 6:00PM and will last approximately 1 hour.
Light food and drink will be available.

ABOUT THE ACTOR: Bob Gleason has a degree in Theatre Arts from West Chester University. He has performed on stage, screen, television, radio, and in opera and ballet (Peter and the Wolf). While serving in the U.S. Army he toured Europe with the 7th Army Soldiers Chorus.
These programs have taken him from Washington D.C. to San Diego, California, and from El Paso, Texas to Milwaukee, Wisconsin (21 states, so far). He has performed at the White House Visitors Center, The Smithsonian Institution, Constitution Hall, George Washington’s Mount Vernon, Ford’s Theatre, Independence Hall, The National Constitution Center, The Union League of Philadelphia, Valley Forge National Park, Federal Hall in NYC, numerous historic sites, and a long list of schools, libraries and other venues public and private. He lives near Lansdale, PA with his wife of 35+ years, and a large stock of costumes, props, and books.
Payment and Cancellation Policy: Payment is due online at the time of registration. Cancellations made seven or more days in advance of the event will receive a refund minus a 5% processing fee. Cancellations made within seven days of the event will not receive a refund. Events and field trips with fees of $10 or less are not refundable at any time unless canceled by NHSM. NHSM retains the right to update or change these requirements at any time.
