The ABC's of Banned Books: K is for The Kite Runner

“There is only one sin, and that is theft... when you tell a lie, you steal someone's right to the truth.”
What a pivotal line for a Banned Book discussion.
Published in 2003, The Kite Runner still routinely ranks on current lists of the most frequently challenged books. There is no doubt that this is a tough read, with themes of mental health and sexual violence, this book contains very difficult and mature trauma.
Reasons for banning have typically focused on sexual assault, though challenges often also cite offensive language, suicide, objections to religious viewpoints, and LGBTQIA+ elements.
Khaled Hosseini has openly criticized these bans, arguing that restricting access to the novel deprives students of important opportunities to build empathy and understand complex global histories.
“There is a way to be good again...”
As always, thank you for going on this banned book journey with me. The importance of fighting for our right to free speech is highlighted with every meeting, with every discussion, with every quote.
