The Five Precepts: Nurturing Peace, Wisdom and Courage in Everyday Life
A Five-Session Class with Kate Siber and the Next Gen Group
For People Ages 20-40 ish
Tuesdays, January 13 and 27, February 3, 17 and 24
6:00-7:30 p.m. IN PERSON
Whether you are brand new to meditation or have been practicing for a while, you are encouraged and welcome to join us!
If you had been alive 2,600 years ago and had encountered the Buddha, he likely wouldn't have taught you meditation right away. One of the first teachings he may have shared with you is even more foundational to inner and outer peace: sila, or the art of living ethically.
Oftentimes we skip over this straightforward, powerful but not always easy teaching in our haste to get to the "good stuff" of mind training or meditation. But sila is an elemental aspect of the path to inner peace, well-being and social harmony.
Join Dharma leader Kate Siber and Next Gen, the kalyana mitta (spiritual friends) group for people ages 20-40 or so, for a collaborative exploration of this core ethical training, the five precepts.
These guidelines, which encourage us not to take life, steal, misuse our sexuality, lie or abuse intoxicants, are not commandments. We are invited to explore for ourselves their potentials, pitfalls, edges and murky areas. What leads to genuine happiness in our own experience? What leads to genuine harmony and happiness in our communities?
Our time together will include guided meditations, inquiry practices, short dharma reflections and discussion. Kate will host this class, and the Next Gen co-facilitators will anchor the space and share practice experiences.
For these five sessions, this will be a closed group, so please do sign up and join us!
The Next Gen kalyana mitta group is for folks in the first half of their lives seeking community, a relaxed space to practice meditation together, and ways to connect about things that matter. Whether you're a seasoned meditator or brand new, whether you're looking to deepen your spiritual practice or just take a breath and chill for a second, you are welcome here.
COST: The Dharma Center operates on the gift economy and the cost of this offering is on a two-part sliding scale. The fee that you offer through the registration system ($50, $75, $100, or $125 or scholarship options of $25 or $0) supports our nonprofit, which pays the costs of the building, utilities, website, administration, etc.
In keeping with our 2,600-year-old tradition, the teacher of the class is not compensated but rather shares the teachings freely. In turn, you are invited into the practice of dana, or generosity, a gift economy system that has been alive since the time of the Buddha. You are invited to make a donation to support the teacher in continuing their valuable work. Donations in any amount whatsoever are gratefully received, and the practice of generosity is always elective.
DATES: Tuesdays, January 13 and 27, February 3, 17 and 24 from 6:00-7:30 p.m.
LOCATION: Durango Dharma Center, 1800 East 3rd Ave, Ste 109, Durango, CO 81301
QUESTIONS: If you have questions, please reach out to Kristin at [email protected] or leave a message at 970-426-8983.
ABOUT KATE SIBER: Kate serves as a dharma leader on the Dharma Council for the center. She has been practicing meditation since 2012, when she first attended a Monday night talk, followed by a beginner class and attendance in the Next Gen spiritual friends group for people in their 20s and 30s. Kate participated in the sixth iteration of Spirit Rock’s Community Dharma Leader Program and completed her training with an 11-month Dharma Mentoring Program with Erin Treat and Pamela Weiss. She is also among the 24 leaders from across the country invited to join the 2025-2028 retreat teacher training through Spirit Rock Meditation Center and the Insight Meditation Society. Spending time in wild nature has been a dharma gateway for Kate. She is a freelance writer, a correspondent for Outside magazine and a bestselling children's book author.
