About this Event
Description
Two years ago on June 15th , Omotesenke Domonkai Northern California Region celebrated its 50th anniversary. At that time, Omotesenke was granted June 15th, 2024 as “ Omotesenke Day” , by former SF mayor London Breed. In order to celebrate and appreciate Omotesenke Day, we are hosting a public tea ceremony-CHANOYU gathering on June 14th, 2026 in Hokka Nichi Bei Kai in Japan Town, San Francisco.
CHANOYU was established by the first grand master and founder, Sen no Rikyu in the 1500’s.
According to Rikyu, tea is perceived by your heart, rather than your eyes. This has become the fundamental basis of Omotesenke style of CHANOYU.
Please join our anniversary CHANOYU gathering on June 14th! We will serve you a bowl of tea and some okashi sweets.
Registration
Sales ends on June 13th, 10pm.
Seatings will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis on the day.
Please arrive at the venue 15 minutes before the each session. Each session takes about 40-50 minutes.
We will not be able to seat you once the ceremony starts. Refunds will not be provided for late arrivals.
Tea Service
Hiroma Seat: We serve Usucha (Thin Matcha) in our spacious large room.
Koma Seat: We serve Koicha (Thick Matcha) in our traditional small room.
You are welcome to attend both the Koicha and Usucha sessions! Please ensure you book them at different times so your sessions do not overlap.
Note: In the Koma session, guests will share a single bowl of matcha according to traditional etiquette.
Notice on Attire
Guests in casual wear (jeans) or cosplay are invited to enjoy the ceremony from our bench seating. Tatami seating is reserved for guests in attire suitable for traditional mats (Wearing Kimono is not required.).
Additionally, socks are mandatory to enter the tea rooms. In the spirit of the ceremony, white socks are preferred as they reflect the purity of traditional Tabi.
We appreciate your cooperation in wearing attire appropriate for tatami seating to prevent damage to the delicate natural fibers of the tatami. For those in jeans or cosplay, comfortable bench seating is also available.
