After over a quarter-century of bringing joy and cheer, the Hudson Valley’s-own Sloan Wainwright continues to celebrate the season with joy, soul, an ever-growing holiday band and special guests!
Over the past three decades as a songwriter, singer and performer, Sloan Wainwright has played the great concert halls, the most storied listening rooms and top music festivals. As a teacher, coach and mentor, she has taught at the nation’s leading music retreats, influencing and encouraging hundreds of students on their creative journeys.
But one of her favorite roles is that of collaborator, which includes her annual holiday show, which fans affectionately know as the big “Whiz-Bang Shindig,” which will celebrate its 27th year on Saturday, December 6 at the Towne Crier Cafe in Beacon. Along with the Sloan Wainwright Band and her merry posse of harmony-singing “Sloan Flakes,” special guests will include Muppeteer Peter Linz and Sloan’s own granddaughters.
The show includes seasonal favorites, original songs and plenty of special surprises. “The show has grown and expanded joyfully over the past 20 years,” says Wainwright, who previously held the show at venues in Westchester and in New York City before moving the show to Beacon in 2018. “Now, it’s a highlight both for me and the Hudson Valley community, with the Towne Crier as our beautiful venue.”
While she is also a member of a storied family of artists, (including brother Loudon Wainwright, sister-in-law Kate McGarrigle, nephew Rufus Wainwright and nieces Martha Wainwright and Lucy Wainwright Roche), since childhood Wainwright has always walked the artistic path all on her own, with a keen interest in creatively observing and sharing her view of the world that has never diminished and serves as a joyous, spiritual path.
Nephew Rufus Wainwright says of Sloan: “Due to the fact that our family has so many musically-talented members, each one is often dubbed certain titles by members of the public. Sloan is most always crowned ‘The Voice’ and as well as owning this legacy full-throatily, her multifaceted work in song is an astonishing feat.”
