The 24th Oakland International Film Festival - Day 11, Sept 19 - 5:00 PM
About this Event
Native Son
Director: Lathan Hodge
Runtime: 00:12:29
When Chef Nelson German chose Oakland, he wasn't simply opening a restaurant—he was investing in a community. At a time when the city faced economic uncertainty, public safety concerns, and the lasting impacts of the pandemic, he created spaces where food, culture, music, and conversation could bring people together. His restaurants became more than places to dine; they became gathering places that reflected Oakland's diversity, resilience, and belief that community is built one meal at a time. Native Son is his story.
Earth Seed: A People Journey of Radical
Director: Fox Nakai, Jocelyn Jackson
Runtime: 02:05:00
EARTH SEED invites us to envision and enact our collective future from a world awakening to its unraveling. Led by People’s Kitchen Collective, EARTH SEED centers a pilgrimage through California from present-day Los Angeles to Mendocino Woodlands that happened from March – June 2023. We visited with people and places building models for survival and our collective future. Rooted in Octavia Butler’s Parables series, the legacy of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense, and the diaspora of the global south, EARTH SEED enacts radical hospitality as a survival practice. It does so by deepening our relationships with BIPOC activists, artists, educators, farmers, youth, and elders.
