The 1951 waterfront dispute was the largest industrial confrontation in Aotearoa New Zealand history. After years of conflict, waterfront employers and the state determined to have a final showdown with the country’s most militant unionists. To commemorate the 75th anniversary of this historic confrontation, this talk covers both the course of the dispute itself, as well as its significance in our national history. Taking place at almost exactly the halfway mark, the 1951 waterfront dispute stands out as one of the definitive events of 20th century life in Aotearoa New Zealand.
We'll conclude with remarks from Victor Billot, communications officer for the Maritime Union of New Zealand whose kaupapa dates back to the immediate aftermath of the '51
