Join Dr Linda Bryder, Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Auckland, for a fascinating exploration of New Zealand's response to the 1918 influenza epidemic.
The recent COVID-19 pandemic brought renewed attention to the 1918 outbreak, but the historical context matters. This session will explore the different circumstances surrounding the epidemic and the ways New Zealand responded at the time.
Held at Alberton, one of Auckland's finest heritage homes, this is an opportunity to step back into New Zealand's past and discover the stories, responses and historical context surrounding one of the country's most significant public health disasters.
Meet Dr Linda Bryder
A New Zealander by birth, Emeritus Professor Linda Bryder gained her DPhil at the University of Oxford in 1985.
She taught in the History Department of the University of Auckland from 1988 to 2026, lecturing on general New Zealand history, New Zealand social welfare history, and the history of health and medicine in the Western world.
Linda has published widely, with research interests in the history of tuberculosis, infant health and reproductive health.
She is a Fellow of the Royal Society New Zealand Te Apārangi.
