The Japan Day @UCLan (Cultural event) is back for the 11th time between 11:00-18:30 on Friday 7th February 2025
It keeps on evolving and growing year by year. The 11th Japan Day @UCLan's cultural event is going to be held into the evening so that members of public also can attend after work.
Due to the growing demand, although we have moved to a larger space, for Health & Safety and Security reasons, we can only accomodate certain number of people at a time and we are legally obliged to monitor numbers. Please therefore book either a 10:45 Entry Ticket or 15:00 onwards (can entre anytime after 15:00) Entry Ticket per person even if it is for a child via this link : The 11th Japan Day @UCLan セントラル・ランカシャー大学 第 十一回日本文化祭 PM Entry Tickets, Fri 7 Feb 2025 at 15:00 | Eventbrite. You are welcome to stay all day, in that case, please book both AM and PM entry tickets per person/child.
This all day cultural event is open to all, including members of public, from all age groups. Please note: because this event has grown big, the venue has moved to Foster Building (no longer Harrington Social space) since the 10th. Foster Building is located behind the Black Technology building that is standing at the University's big roundabout. Please entre from the front door and register your arrival at the desks in Foster Social Space. All attendees must present tickets and get an appropriately coloured name sticker on their chest. Parents with children, please do not forget to obtain a wrist band and register with our floor officers before entering the venue for the safety of your children.
Poeple with limited mobilities: please park your car behind the Foster Building that is also close to Darwin Building. You can entre the venue from the back door and register your arrival once you have entred the Foster Social Space.
The event is going to be opened by our Special Guest from the Japanese Embassy, after our opening performance.
You can watch the powerful Taiko Drumming performances and also join Taiko Drumming workshops (Pre-booking necessary from the link below) by Kaminari Taiko Group. You may want to walk the Runway in your favourite Japan themed attire and get a lot of attention (please get in touch with the organiser by the end of January the very latest: [email protected]).
NEW: There will be Japanese video game demos that are only available in Japan, Japanese Curry Bun and Matcha cake sale, Japan themed Flea Market, Packed Food sale and Kujibiki (Japanese Raffle), Comparison of three differently graded matcha tasting (Pre-booking necessary from the link below) by and Japanese Alchohol Lecture and Tasting session (only for responsible adult in the evening and Pre-booking necessary from the link) this year.
If you have been curious but had no opporunity before then why not register to experience learning the language: there will be taster sessions for complete beginners of Japanese. There are our usual hands-on workshops such as Sa-do: Tea ceremony, Sho-do: Calligraphy, Samurai Warrior helmet making using Origami techniques and Furoshiki eco wrapping. You can also see displays and performances such as Marshal Arts, Manga/Anime, Japanese Sign Language (JSL) vs British Sign Language (BSL)and J-Pop Dance. Japan information stalls where you can learn about hidden gems of Japan from Hokkaido to Okinawa is available, job opporunities under the JET scheme by the Embassy and a leading Japanese saurce company, Nihon Shokken, is offering food tasting.
Some of the sessions are BSL interpreted.

To take any part of this all-day & open to public Cultural Focused event on Friday 7th February 2025, please read the following carefully.
There will be University's canteen and cafe facilities. After 15:00PM you can still purchase snacks and drinks from stalls. You are also welcome to bring your own food and drinks but please make sure that all litters are dealt by responsibly.
If you would like to attend specific timed workshops such as Taiko Drumming, Japanese Language Sessions, Graded Matcha tasting and Japanese alchohol lecture and taster session, please book your place by following the further links below (under construction).
If you would like to walk the Runway, please get in touch with the organiser: Takako Amano, Senior Lecturer in Japanese Studies, [email protected] with the title 'Runway performance'. Also if you would like to volunteer or host a stall such as Flea Market that is Japan themed, please get in touch with the Organiser with the title "Flea market for Japan Day" by the end of January.
Please be aware that the single event start time may change on the actual event day.
Disclaimers:
1) Because this is an event that is open to public, under 18s and people who require special attention must be accompanied and supervised at all time by adults who are able to take care of them. School or Group visits that involve under 18s, please get in touch with the organiser at your earliest opporunity so that special programme may be drawn for your group.
2) Please acknowledge that due to the nature of the event, there will be a lot of photo shoots and filmings are going to be happening and they are going to be used for publicities and future promotions.
3) The venue becomes 'Japan' for the day. We are determined to keep the venue clean and tidy so that we can leave the venue spotless and unclattered with any rubbish. We request your 100% cooperation.
4) In order to improve our activities, you will be asked to answer a survey after the event via your email adress.
