THAW 001 marks the first iteration of THAW, an ongoing curatorial programme dedicated to site-responsive exhibitions beyond the conventional architecture of the gallery. Inaugurated with a single new work by Richie Culver, the project is situated within the everyday context of a working butcher’s shop in Hull. Rather than treating the venue as an alternative exhibition space, THAW begins from the proposition that each site already possesses its own material, social and spatial logics. The work is encountered within these existing conditions, allowing context to become an active component of its meaning.
Alongside the work, Pierre-Alexandre Mateos and Charles Teyssou present a newly commissioned text conceived not as interpretation but as a parallel contribution to the exhibition. Installed as part of the presentation itself, the text occupies the same spatial and conceptual field as the artwork, functioning as an autonomous element rather than an explanatory device.
Presented during the period surrounding Frieze London, THAW 001 proposes a parallel exhibition ecology—one in which locality, attentiveness and context are privileged over spectacle. Each future iteration of THAW will bring together a single artwork and a commissioned textual contribution, establishing an evolving programme of precise, site-responsive exhibitions in which object, site and language exist in dialogue rather than hierarchy.
