Nl De chada, met haar opvallende spits en gouden kleur, is bedoeld om op de kroon van de Thaise koning te lijken, een heilig symbool van koningschap en goddelijkheid. Maar wat als de chada geen kroon voorstelde? Choreograaf Thanapol Virulhakul laat vier performers het voorwerp onderzoeken. Niet de geschiedenis ervan, maar de vorm en het gewicht sturen hun bewegingen, alsof ze er voor het eerst mee in aanraking komen.
Ze tasten de contouren af met hun lichamen, en schudden de hangers los. Virulhakul zet zijn eerdere onderzoek rond fetisjisme – waarbij genot wordt gedicteerd door een object – voort en verbeeldt nieuwe, radicale relaties met de chada. Het object gaat van hand tot hand in een gezamenlijke daad van subversie, een klein democratisch gebaar – en wordt zo een lichamelijk attribuut, een instrument, een megafoon. Het leidt de dansers naar sensuele bijeenkomsten, of barricades, een verwijzing naar de recente politieke onrust in Thailand.
De performers worden kameraden, hun schaduwen versmelten tot één massa en de kroon lost op in het sociale lichaam. Met Lenins idee van revolutie als een wonder in het achterhoofd, creëert Virulhakul – zich volledig bewust van de politieke lading – een uitzonderlijke performance waarin de chada tegelijk achteloos en met grote zorg wordt behandeld.

La chada, avec sa pointe caractéristique et sa couleur dorée, est une coiffe inspirée de la couronne du roi thaïlandais, symbole sacré de royauté et de divinité. Mais comment habiter la chada une fois dépouillée de sa symbolique monarchique ? Dans ce projet sensible du chorégraphe Thanapol Virulhakul, quatre interprètes entrent en relation avec l’objet. Leurs mouvements ne se rapportent pas à l’histoire de l’objet, mais à sa forme et à son poids, comme s’il était vu pour la première fois.
Les danseur·euses en explorent les contours sur leur corps, en font trembler les ornements. Virulhakul, qui avait déjà travaillé sur le fétichisme – où le plaisir est dicté par l’objet –, imagine ici d’autres relations, radicales, avec la couronne. La chada passe de main en main en un geste collectif de subversion, dans un souffle de démocratie. Elle devient un attribut corporel, un instrument, un mégaphone. Il suscite des rassemblements sensuels ou des barricades faisant écho aux récents coups d’État et soulèvements en Thaïlande. Les interprètes deviennent des camarades, leurs corps se font masse et la couronne se fond dans le corps social. En écho à Lénine, pour qui la révolution est un miracle, Virulhakul crée une situation incroyable où la chada est manipulée à la fois avec nonchalance et précaution – conscient de son caractère explosif.

With its distinctive spire and gold colour, the chada is a headdress meant to resemble the crown of the Thai king, a holy symbol of royalty and divinity. How might one relate to the chada if it did not represent a crown? Choreographer Thanapol Virulhakul presents a delicate and quietly subversive project in which four bodies explore the chada. Their movements respond not to its history but to the shape and weight, as if encountering it for the first time. They trace its contours across their body parts, shaking them only to explore the trembling pendants. Building on his previous research on fetishism—where pleasure is guided by the object—Virulhakul opens a space to imagine other radical relations with a crown. It passes from hand to hand in a shared act of subversion, a hint of democracy; it becomes a bodily attribute, a tool, a megaphone. It leads the dancers into sensual gatherings or barricades, echoing Thailand’s recent coups and uprisings. Performers become comrades, their shadows merge into a single mass, and the crown dissolves into one element among many in the social body. Invoking Lenin’s notion of revolution as a miracle, Virulhakul creates an unbelievable moment in which the chada is handled with both nonchalance and care, fully aware of the politically explosive gesture.
