What was a bumboat? Why is a lighterman called a lighterman? Where could you buy exotic wildlife, from a parrot to a tiger? Which workers on the river were so notorious for their bad language that even the great lexicographer Dr Johnson was lost for words? In this illustrated talk, Pete Smith introduces some of the many trades to thrive along the Thames, some long defunct and many still thriving.

In-person: For access to the event, please use the Aldermanbury entrance to Guildhall Library/The London Centre.

Online via YouTube: Event link to be sent to attendees 24 hours prior to the talk.
