Textile Market & Conversation with Master Weaver Nilda Callañaupa Alvarez
About this Event
Join us at Eaton House for an afternoon with Nilda Callañaupa Alvarez, one of the world's foremost authorities on traditional Andean textiles.
Born in Chinchero, in Peru's Cusco region, Nilda learned to spin and weave as a child and went on to found the in 1996. Today, CTTC works with ten weaving communities across the Cusco highlands, helping preserve techniques, language, and cultural knowledge passed down across generations — while giving weavers a sustainable livelihood through their craft. Nilda has shared this work internationally, teaching and lecturing across the Americas, Europe, and Australia, and was named to the Explorers Club's EC50 in 2024.
Nilda will speak about the past, present, and future of Andean weaving — how textiles carry history, identity, and connection across Pre-Columbian, colonial, and contemporary eras, and what it means to keep that lineage alive today.
Her talk will be framed by a Textile Market before and after the conversation, featuring authentic handwoven Peruvian textiles direct from CTTC's partner communities — decorative pieces, blankets, wearables, and more. All purchases support CTTC and the weaving communities it partners with.
