In this hands-on workshop, you will learn how to make your own terra sigillata from raw materials, how to add in stains to develop a color palette, and how to apply to greenware to create your own original designs.

The workshop is being led by Pierre Bounaud who has been experimenting with Terra Sigillata and alternative firings for over 15 years. By the end of this workshop, you will have a deeper appreciation for the versatility of Terra Sigillata as a surface treatment, and an understanding of how Saggar Firing can be used to enhance the natural beauty and unpredictability of ceramics.

Participants are asked to use low fire or midrange smooth clay. Bring several demo pieces and small flat test tiles at the greenware or bone dry stage (fully dried) to practice the application of Terra Sigillata. During the workshop, we will talk about the different uses of terra sigillata within your own practice, from low temperature firing to mid-range firing.

Material costs and bisque firing are included in the cost of the workshop. There will be an optional opportunity to participate in a Saggar Firing the weekend of January 24th-26th. The exact dates and times will be decided once the workshop is filled.

This workshop is perfect for ceramic artists, hobbyists, or anyone looking to expand their knowledge of surface treatments and firing techniques. No previous experience is required, but a basic understanding of pottery or clay work will help you get the most out of the workshop.
