Step into the deepening shadows of Holy Week.
Tenebrae—meaning “darkness” or “shadows”—is one of the most powerful and moving services of the Christian year. Through scripture, psalms, and silence, we remember the growing darkness that surrounded Jesus in the final hours before the crucifixion.
During the service, candles are gradually extinguished as the story of betrayal, suffering, and abandonment unfolds. The church slowly descends into darkness, reflecting the fear of the disciples and the seeming triumph of night.
Yet Tenebrae is not about despair.
It is about waiting in the darkness with faith, trusting that God is still at work—even when the light seems hidden.
This ancient and deeply contemplative liturgy begins and ends in silence, inviting us to listen, reflect, and enter fully into the mystery of Holy Week.
Because of the quiet, somber, and sometimes intense nature of the service, it may not be suitable for younger children.
