This Holy Week, St. Bart’s will offer Tenebrae for the first time — a candlelit service of scripture, reflection, silence, and sacred music.
Tenebrae (Latin for “shadows”) is one of the most powerful and contemplative liturgies of the Christian year. Through ten brief reflections tracing the final hours of Jesus’ life, candles are extinguished one by one as the sanctuary gradually grows darker.
Throughout the service, a professional string quartet will perform short musical meditations drawn from the string quartets of Joseph Haydn — creating space to listen, reflect, and pray.
This is not a concert, but a deeply reverent Holy Week experience — beautiful, accessible, and meaningful for longtime churchgoers and those who may not regularly attend.
If you attend one additional Holy Week service this year, consider making it this one.
