About this Event
Drawing on the rituals and ceremonies of our historic relationships with canals and rivers, we’ll explore these themes together through gentle walking, art-making, and shared reflection.
Our first session takes us from Harlesden to Stonebridge Park — a noisy, graffiti-strewn stretch of canal in the heart of North West London’s industrial district, where the unexpected smells of incense and baking biscuits linger in the air.
This walk invites us to slow down and spend time with a place that’s often overlooked.
…Attending
How can we restore awe and delight for places we usually walk past, or consider unlovable?
How can our senses help us pay closer attention?
…Tending
Who takes care of this water?
What kind of care does it need?
How does it, in turn, care for you?
…Tenderness
What state is the water in right now?
What might its future be?
Where do we need to be careful, or kind?
Many of London’s waterways suffer from litter, yet they are lovingly tended by volunteer groups (which you’re very welcome to join too).
We’ll end by asking: how can we turn something harmful into something hopeful?
Together, we’ll recycle discarded soda cans into small charms to carry with us — simple acts of care, attention, and transformation.
What to bring
Please bring a reusable mug for tea. Please dress to the weather as we will go even if it rains.
Accessibility
All are welcome who are able to travel along the towpath for approximately 2km. The pace will be gentle, with time to pause, notice, and rest along the way.
