For many years the settlement of Sydney was protected from epidemics by the buffer of distance. But evolving technology shortened the trip, so more ships brought fatal diseases.Over the decades we have faced smallpox, measles, scarlet fever, typhoid, Asiatic flu, Bubonic plague, Spanish Influenza, polio, and AIDS, with a disheartening pattern of lack of preparation, and consequent panic.
Featuring death, disaster, politics, evolving science, and the recurring patterns of human nature, this presentation will examine the past to discern how we have dealt with these threats, how each tragedy transformed Sydney and 'Sydneysiders', and why we feel so much more confident today.
Jo Henwood is always telling stories.
As a Tour Guide and Education Officer, she leads tours in many heritage sites around Sydney and Windsor, including women’s history tours. She is an Accredited Storyteller with Australian Storytellers, Accredited Professional Guide with the Institute of Australian Tour Guides and co-founder of the Australian Fairy Tale Society. Jo is a museum theatre creative, workshop leader and public speaker on history, literature, creative writing, intangible culture and storytelling.
