Tempest & Volcanoes: Ten Things You Should Know

Discover more about the life and legacy of pioneering volcanologist Tempest Anderson (1846-1913) and learn about the latest research into volcanoes with Dr Rebecca Williams of the University of Hull.

York is not an obviously volcanic city, but it was the home of trailblazing volcanologist Dr Tempest Anderson. An ophthalmic surgeon, Anderson was a noteworthy York philanthropist who was an expert in photography with a particular passion for volcanoes. His photographs are some of the earliest pictures of erupting volcanoes. Capturing details of volcanic landscapes, Anderson’s great legacy is a photographic collection still informing volcano science today.

In this talk, Rebecca will unearth the fascinating fundamentals of volcanoes, illustrated with Anderson’s photographic collection. Join us on an awe-inspiring journey from York to the world’s volcanoes, learning the latest research into volcanoes and how people live alongside these beautiful, but sometimes deadly landforms.

Earlier in the day, Rebecca will co-lead a guided walk, Tempest’s Volcano Trail, around York, uncovering volcanic rocks found in the city centre, alongside locations related to Tempest Anderson. Developed by Rebecca, author of Volcanoes: Ten Things You Should Know, and geologist Liam Herringshaw, the trail is part of the VolcaniCity project, supported by funding from the Curry Fund of the Geologists' Association. Whilst designed to be enjoyed together, the walk and talk can also be enjoyed separately.

The talk is aimed at volcano-hunters aged 8 and up, and all under-16s must be accompanied by an adult. It will be held in the York Medical Society, the former home and workplace of Tempest Anderson, where some items related to Tempest Anderson will be on display. Rebecca will also be available to sign copies of her book.
