Tejido: Una Introducción a Textiles Tradicionales
About this Event
In this workshop, you will learn the art of weaving that has been inherited from generation to generation. The Zapotec artisan Vero Mendoza will demonstrate the process she uses in the production of her textiles made on a pedal loom.
Each participant will have the opportunity to create and take home a weaving using a 12”x12” bastidor (weaving frame) and 3 skeins of handspun, naturally-dyed wool.
About Artist
Vero Mendoza is a Zapotec woman and artisan from Teotitlan Del Valle Oaxaca, Mexico. Her mother carried Vero on her back with her rebozo, while she washed wool in the river to prepare it for their textiles. She cared, nurtured and taught her everything she knows. This traditional art form sustained them; however, after her mother’s passing, Vero was not able to weave for 3 years, because of the heartache. This year she is resuming her mothers legacy and gently returning home. When her hands are over the loom she can feel her mother guiding every string. She senses her presence in the essence of each natural element and witnesses her magic in the completion of every tapestry. Through weaving, mother and daughter are together again - her mother's spirit living on in every textile she creates.
