About this Event
Tech-NO Teach-Ins are being held across the month of April to help us reconnect with analogue forms of creativity that let the mind wander towards the possible of a world where digitial technology is a part of a much larger whole. The Teach-Ins feature a host of creative minds bringing forward practices of creative writing, collage, zine making, and visual art that existed long before social media. They ask us to consider what it is we love to do when we are not scrolling and how we may find our way back to these things as part of our daily practices.
We have a rough schedule of some special workshops planned, but it will mostly be an open arts space where creative freedom takes the reins!
Scheduled Workshops
Afternoon Tea Stitch & Bitch (April 8)
Host: Dr. Shana MacDonald
Info: Join Shana and Spencer for the chillest afternoon of stabbing things repeatedly in the name of creation! aka a needlework-focused afternoon! Spencer might teach us how to make lil pouches!
Analog Meme Treasure Stashing (April 9)
Host: Dr. Adra Raine
Info: Memes--shareable, fast, funny, furious, tender, ridiculous--don't require a screen. Using pen, paper, paint, collage, cardboard, and whatever else is lying around, we'll make small pieces of writing and art that work like memes: punchy, reproducible, meant to travel. We'll multiply them by photocopy and then stash them in public places for strangers to find--libraries, bookstores, parks, thrift stores, bathroom stalls, and anywhere else that feels right. Led by Dr. Adra Raine, who led an amazing Erasure Poetry workshop at the Summit!
Exploring Genre and Seasonality Through Writing (April 10)
Host: Dr. Emma Brandt
Info: Full title: Fiction, Poetry, Fairy Tale, Folklore: Exploring Genre and Seasonality Through Writing --- One of our original goals for Tech-NO Teach-Ins was to make space for a bit of a writing retreat! Dr. Emma Brandt (also a presenter from the Summit) will be guiding us through whimsy and creativity through the written word!
Manifesto Workshop + Zine-Making Circle (April 13-14, TWO PARTS)
Host: Dr. Adra Raine
Info: What makes a manifesto work? We'll look at some of history's most galvanizing examples--documents that identify a damaged world and demand a different one--and use them as a springboard to write our own. In Part One, participants will draft personal or collective manifestos and assemble them into single-fold zines ready to be photocopied and let loose. In Part Two, we reconvene for a fold and scold party (a variation on the stitch and bitch): armed with fresh photocopies, snacks, and music, we cut, fold, and prepare our zines for distribution into the world.
Un-Breaking News (April 16th)
Host: Jordana Cox
Info: Does the news leave you feeling angry, bored, or despondent? You’re not alone; around the world, contemporary artists have been using an array of techniques, from collage to weaving, to critique and reimagine news media. Come learn from some examples, then make your own work using crafts supplies we provide.
Creative Writing (& Soundscapes!) (April 17th)
Host: Dr. Kiera Obbard
Info: Dr. Kiera Obbard (also a presenter from the Summit) will be guiding us through a creative writing workshop with soundscapes!
