Alan will talk about:
Confronted with fears of the industrial revolution, war with Napoleon’s France, and even rumours that the King was mad, the last years of the eighteenth century presented a perilous time for England. And yet, in the midst of it all, it was announced that King George III was to take a summer holiday with his family in Weymouth. There was a growing fashion for sea-bathing, and it was eventually considered that such a holiday might help the King’s medical problems. And so it was agreed by his doctors that the King and Queen and their daughters might come to Weymouth. They did so, and came again and again over a period of some fifteen years.
About Alan:
Dr Alan Chedzoy, author of Seaside Sovereign: King George III in Weymouth (Dovecote Press), will retell stories of these vacations, sometimes hilarious, sometimes poignant, which were a significant influence in popularising seaside holidays to the present day. Incidentally, they also helped to transform a small fishing village into the summer capital of the largest empire in the world.
